There’s a growing idea that digital craft doesn’t matter like it used to. That AI handles the heavy lifting, no-code tools smooth out the rough edges, and design systems keep everything consistent. You can move fast, ship clean screens, and tick all the boxes, so where’s the room for craft?
This week the Canvs R&E team has spent some time pondering this concept, let’s dive into some details.
The truth is, it hasn’t gone anywhere. It’s just harder to see. What used to live in the polish of a screen now lives in how well a system holds together, how a product behaves at scale, and how clearly decisions unfold across a flow. The care’s still there. But you need to look a little closer to find it.
Key takeaways from this read:
1. Craft has shifted from the surface to the structure
While good visuals are important, it’s also vital how well the design holds under real-world pressure. Systems, edge cases, and content that guides without friction, that’s where the real thinking shows up now.
2. Most products look good, but feel forgettable
Design tools have raised the baseline. Clean UI is the norm. But craft isn’t about clean, it’s about clarity, tone, conviction. That’s the part you remember.
3. Great design feels obvious only after it works
When something’s well crafted, it doesn’t announce itself. It just works, without making the user think twice. But getting there takes taste, judgement, and care you won’t find in a template.
